(What) to cook or not to cook?

Over the years I’ve become more and more interested in (healthy) food. Especially when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease a few years ago. I’ve become convinced that one of the worst things to eat is refined sugar and once you start looking for that, you will notice there are a lot of things that contain sugar (even things you might not expect it in). Once you start reading food labels, it’s impossible to stop. In the Netherlands I knew most things I could buy, but when we came to the US I had the big challenge of finding new healthy foods. Everything was different here and even the few products they had in the US too, tasted different (either much sweeter or much saltier).

I started baking my own bread because we couldn’t get used to the store bought ones (they contain much more sugar and/or salt then we’re used to). At least now I know for sure my bread does not contain sugar and not too much salt. Also I usually make my own (pasta) sauces and dressings from scratch. Some work out better than others, but you don’t know until you try, right? I even make my own almond milk now. A couple of years ago I would have laughed if someone had told me I would ever do that. But since I got my blentec at Mothers day, I’m totally addicted to it. I thought I’d give it a try, because I totally love, love, love almonds, and it was just soooooo good. Store bought almond milk doesn’t even come close to it. And so I make a batch of almond milk every other 3 days or so. I’d say pretty good for a girl that doesn’t like to cook.

Still, I think it’s pretty tough finding my way in the world of (healthy) food. Recently I’ve discovered a website I find very useful and since I know other people around me that are also interested in healthy food, so I thought it might be helpful to share this website http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/index.php. They have some interesting articles. Also, they have a list that tells you what produce should best be bought organic and which ones are safe buying conventionally grown.
